I rescued Stranger from the Humane Society in Wooster, Ohio in August of 1995 thinking she would just be one of many fosters all to be named "Stranger" (so that we wouldn't get attached, of course. Ha!). I knew there was something special about this girl and she wouldn't be going anywhere. I just had to break it to John, my boyfriend who already had four bouvs. The poor thing was deathly afraid of men and barked quite a bit so I knew there was some sort of abuse/neglect in her past. The good thing about her was that she was so responsive to love and affection I knew these minor gliches could be worked out with patience especially on John's part. I had a little talk with her and told her that if he was paying the bills she better make an effort! After a couple of weeks she realized he was not the "enemy" and really started to come around. Numerous obedience classes later and tons of socializing Stranger is now a Canine Good Citizen, has her HIC, is currently working on her Novice Agility and Companion Dog titles, and will be giving Therapy Dog International a try next weekend. John and I still do more rescue than we care to put a number to and no, we never have had another Stranger! Every rescue dog gets a real name and a real family all their own. We just get to enjoy them for a little while! |
