Molly’s 8 week post TPLO check
07.25.09
Molly, our 5.5 year old Border Collie mix, had TPLO surgery at the Colorado State vet school on May 22. She had her 8 week checkup yesterday.
She is doing very well and her x rays were great. She still limps a bit, but is improving rapidly.
We followed the post recovery instructions religously. She was isolated in an ex pen for 7 weeks in the living room which is isolated from our other dogs. She adjusted to the ex pen very well. We have a very comfy dog bed in it and she seemed to be very comfortable in it. We let her out of the ex pen last week, but she was still isolated in the living room. She has even lost 4 pounds which the dr. was very happy with as she needs to lose weight. I credit the dog food I switched to last year as we got weight off of several overweight dogs we have/had.
We tried 3 types of e collars at the beginning to try and prevent her from licking her incision. To no avail. We first tried a hard plastic collar we had. Then a soft Comfy Collar and an inflatable Pro Collar. We would put it on and she would look at us. We would leave the room and peek around the corner to see her remove it as soon as we were out of sight. We gave up and just kept the incision clean and she stopped licking it within a couple of days.
So far, so good.
